| Preparing for your practical driving test |
16 Aug |
Once you’ve had a few lessons with your driving school in Norwich or local area and passed your driving theory test, it’s time to focus on your practical driving test. Your driving instructor will want you to pass first time, so during every lesson they will keep a record book with your progress in and will use it to teach you the skills you need to brush up on.
Searching on the internet will also give you some great information and guides to the practical driving test. These guides cover all of the manoeuvres you will be tested on so that you can practice them, as well as expert tuition from experienced driving instructors. Before you practice with a friend or family member ensure that you are on their insurance policy and that the car is fully taxed and tested, and display your learner plates on the front and back or the vehicle.
Some driving schools in Norwich also offer mock practical tests which can be used as a trial run and you driving instructor will be your mock examiner, giving you information about your progress. Using a qualified driving instructor is the easiest way to pass your test and get onto the open road.
| Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor |
26 Jul |
If you are looking for a change in career and you are interested in becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) then there are a number of things to consider first. There are many driving schools in Liverpool that offer training to become an ADI, when you decide to look for one it’s advisable to look into more than one company so you can compare to see which offers the best service. You will probably be familiar with some that you see advertised on TV such as RED, AA and BSM however there are many others out there.
If you want to become an ADI then you need to firstly have held a clean Driving Licence for 4 out of the last 6 years (sometimes points are allowed but you need to discuss this with the Driving Standards Agency), you then need to undergo and pass a Criminal Records Check . Then finally successfully pass a three part qualifying exam which is a theory test, a practical test of your driving ability and a practical test of your ability to instruct.
When you look to become a ADI you need to decide if it will be worth while spending all this time and money, do you want to be part of a driving school in Birmingham or start out on your own as an individual. Some people find being part of a large driving school such as RED, AA and BSM means you have to ‘fight’ to get pupils especially if there is a high number of instructors in your area but a low pupil take up. Learning to drive is quite an expensive and set to get more so and many people now are finding that it is not such a necessity if you can’t afford it, so being an ADI can be quite competitive.
| Applying for your provisional driving licence |
8 Jul |
As, with many other 17 year olds, you want to get a provisional licence and learn to drive there are a few things you should do to keep you safe and legal. You can apply for your provisional driving licence three months before your 17th birthday or 16 if you are disabled and receiving mobility allowance. You will not be able to drive legally on public roads in the UK till you are 17, even if you receive your provisional licence before then. You can however start practising on private land as long as the site has a gate and is away from public roads.
Another good thing to check before you book your driving lessons is your eyes. You must make sure that you can read a number plate from about 5 car lengths away; if you cannot read it then you will need your eyes tested by an optician before learning to drive. If you already wear glasses or contact lenses you must wear them at all times when driving even if you do not need to wear them all the time.
When you are practicing driving in a car that is not a driving instructors you will need to display ‘L’ plates on the front and back of the vehicle (Wales requires ‘D’ plates instead); you must ensure that they can be seen by other drivers and pedestrians easily. The ‘L’ plates must be taken off or covered up if a fully qualified driver takes the wheel.
Once you have sorted these things out you can be safe in the knowledge that you are legal and safe to drive and start booking your driving lessons with a driving school in Newcastle, a driving school in Sunderland or one that’s local to you.

Learning to drive is one of the things most 17 year olds look forward to do however for some the whole process can also be quite daunting because there is so much to think about, many things to consider and a lot to learn.
The first thing you need to do is get your provisional licence, you have to do this before you can legally drive a car, you can get your provisional licence form from the post office or you can apply online with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
Once you have your provisional license you can start to learn to drive, you can either choose to have a family member or friend teach you however they must be over 21 years of age and must have held (and still hold) a full licence, in the relevant vehicle category, for three years. You must also display ‘L’ plates in a conspicuous position on the front and rear of the vehicle you are driving. You can also choose to enrol at a driving school in Cardiff and have an instructor who must be registered with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).
Once you have started to learn to drive you need to take your theory test, this is compulsory and has to be taken and passed before you can take your practical driving test, your instructor can help you with any questions you may have with your theory test.
Once your instructor from your driving school in Cardiff feels that you are suitable prepared and you have assed your theory test you can book your practical test, this can be done online or over the phone, they will make sure you can drive safely and have knowledge of the Highway Code and can demonstrate this through your driving. Your practical test will last about 40 minutes and the examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, including when you are carrying out the set exercises.
Now if you have passed your test successfully first time you can now send off for your full driving licence, your examiner will fill in the appropriate forms and send it off for you, if you did not pass your practical first time, do not become disheartened instead go ahead and book it again and get more practice at what you failed at.

Before you can book your driving lessons to learn to drive you must have a valid provisional driving licence. You must also make sure that any other vehicle you drive, other than the driving instructors is road worthy and properly taxed and insured.
Major cities have seen an increase of driving instructors over the past few years with driving schools in Birmingham showing a 30% increase in students wanting to drive. Driving instructors have also sprung up in more rural areas as demand has grown.
If you don’t want to learn how to drive with a driving school, you must make sure that you are accompanied by another driver who is over 21 years old and has held a driving licence for 3 years. A learner’s plate must also be positioned on the front and rear of the car.
